Confidence. It’s a big word, with a bittersweet aftertaste. How does it really work? Are there really singers who just have this freakishly unrealistic ability to get up on stage and NEVER feel inadequate ? And are the rest of us bound to an eternity of constant wondering, “am I good enough to do this?”

Well I have good news, and bad news. Yes the two extremes exist, but most of us fall right in the middle. It’s part of the human condition to fear failure to the point of holding our progress hostage. That’s how we were created. The bad news is, even professional vocal coaches second-guess themselves and their abilities. Everybody does to a certain degree. The good news is, that no matter which side of the spectrum you fall on, there are ways to increase the number of times you feel confident, and decrease the number of times you don’t.

First, know what to expect out of your voice. Confidence starts with good technique and training, and the ability to use it. Think back to when you drove a car for the first time…. There’s so much going on at the same time, so many nobs, handles, wheels, not to mention the impending danger of the other cars coming straight at you. Did you feel confident the first time? Probably not. But something happened the second time didn’t it. You knew what to expect. You weren’t COMFORTABLE yet, that came later, but you knew what to realistically expect out of the yourself, the car, and the road. (Or parking lot in my case.) Here’s the bottom line: Know what to expect out of your own voice. Know what you’re dealing with. If you’re unsure, that’s okay. Just find somebody who can help, and work on this for a while.

Second, if you’re already to a place where your voice is consistently cooperating with you, and you’re getting what you want out of it more often than not, then this one will be quick. Trust your voice. If you are to a point where you can open your mouth and KNOW what’s going to come out, then it’s no different from practice, to the stage, to the studio. Seems too simple doesn’t it? But it’s really a much bigger concept than you think initially. Say it out loud. “Trust my own voice.” Trust that your hard work has paid off. Trust that you ARE where you want to be, and that when you open your mouth, the magic will be there to become a successful singer.

Thirdly, make sure it’s something that YOU want to do, and that you feel LED to do. If you’re a sparrow, all the lessons in the world couldn’t make you pass for a confident peacock. Seek counsel and advice, just don’t allow any other humans to get in the way of what you want or what God wants for you.

Image Development:
Work towards creating a unique image for yourself.  That will be something exclusive to you and which an audience will retain in their memory. Outwardly you should work on your physical personality which should be powerful and attractive. Inwardly it should be your specific style of singing. Look within you to find out what you can enhance to the maximum and what are your strengths and weaknesses.

Be Original:
Try to be as original as possible. Imitation or singing other people’s work is not much appreciated. Have your own original songs, practice and perform them as many times as you can so that soon people will identify you with the song and performance.

Grab Opportunity with Both Hands:
In any art field the more exposure you get, the more successful you become. So grab any opportunity you get, to sing and show off your talent. No opportunity can be too small when your goal is to sing well and succeed. Let people know that you are a singer and get them to listen. You will never know when a talent scout or a producer is hunting.

Believe in Yourself:
Have you ever seen a good salesman at work? He believes in the product he sells and hence he is confident when he talks and makes other people believe in it too. That should be your approach to singing. Believe in yourself and your capacity. Build your self confidence. This will reflect in your singing and believe me your dreams will come true.

A student recently asked me, “Is it necessary to use sex to sell my image in the entertainment industry?” Initially, I began to define ‘sex’ as being case specific. It is evident that sex holds an ever-present dominance in the entertainment industry and has for quite some time.

However, the idea of what is acceptable and what is profane has been constantly evolving. I left it up to my student to explore this question, “Are you willing to, according to cultural tendencies, ‘exploit’ yourself and your own morality for the sake of popularity?”

The answer to this question is not as simple as it seems. Without a doubt, sex permeates the very fabric of the entertainment industry’s primary marketing strategy. Appearing in all major forms of media and even in public education, it is as direct as it is subtle. Some people associate ‘sex’ with love and positive feelings. Others see a more lustful and negative connotation (e.g. moralists). The true discrepancies surrounding ‘sex’ arise when these different social norms clash at a live performance where a fifteen year old girl is thrust on stage with little more than two pieces of fabric separating her from the audience. Again, to some, this is what makes the artist more attractive. Others, however, see this behavior as deplorable and even offensive.

In order to gain a foothold in the entertainment industry you must have unique qualities that distinguish you from your competition. Sometimes this entails piercings, tattoos, tennis ball colored felt shoes, stylish haircuts, or even steamy photo shoots. Some people frown on the sight of a tattoo or piercing. Others shun the sight of a young girl on stage wearing a leather push-up and a mini-skirt ala commando. Ultimately, the public will always have a choice to play or pass when it comes to your material so you should constantly ask yourself, “Would I be entertained by this?” The next question that begs to be asked is, “Am I comfortable using sex, or other image enhancements to sell my artistry?”

Remember though, this generation’s fashion can be the next generation’s faux pas. You will always be remembered by the image you present. The public will never know any different. Ultimately, people have the choice to purchase your music and support you as an artist. Who you are on stage doesn’t necessarily portray who you are as a person. If you have found success through an image that some view as objectionable but you find entertaining and acceptable, you should always go with what is best for you. Having said that, you should know exactly what you want to be remembered for; being a sex symbol or a great artist. That choice is always up to you.

Here is the live story on how a 12 years old kid nearly destroys his own singing contest path by choosing the wrong song to sing. The kind I’m going to mention is Shaheen Jafargholi who was a singing contestant in the “Britain got Talent” Show 2.
