Do you have any knowledge of rendering vocal improvement exercises?

It is unfortunate that no short-cuts and easy paths are available for this kind of activity. However, you’ll find some powerful exercises aimed at helping you get there. One of these exercises is known as “yawn-sighs” which is considered by many singers as effective.

Once you perform these vocal improvement exercises everyday, you will start realizing positive changes.

Step 1: The first step is taking a deep inhale through your nose, and singing a relaxing high note with the use of vowel “ah” or “Uh“. Then, start sliding down trying to imagine that you’re playing a small whistle or a trombone which slides up and down just like your voice.

Step 2: The next step in practicing vocal improvement exercises is by singing the lowest pitch that you can sing, with the use of vowel “ah“. After that, you can continue singing the high note again. When you sing the high note, try to slide down to that given low note. It may be common for you to stop halfway down, not being able to make it full to the lowest note.

Just imagines that you are trying to imitate someone vocally in jumping from a high ground into the water. Usually, the sound that they emit is “ah“, and it begins from high note just like coming from top of the hill, sliding down smoothly until it hits the lowest note, just like reaching the surface of the sea. There’s no need to yell, but just utter continuously the lowest note “aah” in singing.

Tips on Vocal Improvement Exercises for Higher Vocal Range

In practicing the vocal improvement exercises, you should be able to make your sound smoothly from the highest to the lowest point. It’s like the figure of a Christmas tree which has a fat bottom going thin at the top. Get this form similar to your vocal shape. The highest note that you sing should be lighter and thinner, and as you sing, you should slide down continuously with your sound until it gets wider when you reach the lowest note.

When you begin from the highest note, you should be able to feel it on top of your head and as you go along, the sound should become thinner, but not weaker. When you sing this particular note, you would often feel just like it’s flowing from the top of your head, instead of from your mouth. When you have slid smoothly from the highest to the lowest pitch, move a little higher and do it once more.

One important thing that you should avoid in learning vocal improvement exercises is that you should never tense your jaw. Begin sliding the tone as soon as you have gotten a kind of yawny breath. Even if you have started in rendering a male falsetto or a head voice, that’s not a problem. What you need to do is slide smoothly without committing big bumps. Keep in mind that doing these vocal improvement exercises requires repetition; this is what makes them work.

Understanding the Great Effects of Vibrato in Singing…

In singing, one important aspect that you have to consider is vibrato in singing. Most of well-known singers are aware of the knowledge in singing vibrato, and they also know that it requires a lot of practice, concentration and guidance. It may be easy for you to sing when you’re taking shower or inside your room, but when you want to shift to the higher level in singing, you need to develop various abilities in singing that can capture the attention of the audience.

These important elements in singing have to be developed and practiced for a long time especially the power of vibrato which is somewhat tricky. Even today, there’s still an existing confusion on how vibrato contributes in singing, and how it is created. When you’re singing in a very relaxed manner without any pressure to reach higher notes, that’s where vibrato comes in.

What is Vibrato in Singing? And It’s Effects

Vibrato is defined as the natural rendition of your voice or forced tone fluctuation. But is the throat or stomach involved in the process of vibrato in singing? Your breathing muscles are found to be responsible in creating vibrato. You can also create a vibrato forcefully with the use of your diaphragm muscles, and you can also possibly manipulate other areas of your voice organ to create it forcefully.

However in general, it is more advisable to create vibrato with less effort or nothing at all. One good example of this is the way Luciano Pavarotti and David Bowie render their song which is natural and possessing a highly-variable effect. If you have a free, focused tone, you can make a minor fluctuation in your pitch naturally which can intensity or warm your sound.

But this doesn’t mean that you should deprive yourself of not learning the conventional way of using and controlling vibrato in singing as desired. It’s the natural way of developing an effective training in singing vibrato which is of primary importance to a singer. But how can a singer acquire the free-will and focused tone that results to having a natural vibrato if one doesn’t concentrate in creating vibrato?

How to Develop Vibrato in Singing?

These basic skills can be learned through constant practice such as proper breathing when you’re rendering a song, and by using your diaphragm to support the tone. Since these basic skills are important in every foundation of vocal production, you should make-up your mind to attend training lessons and practice what you have learned consistently. When you have taken appropriate steps to develop these basic skills thoroughly, and you have a clear understanding that they are easy to work with, you’ll start to feel confident in creating vibrato in singing naturally.

You’ll be surprised that one day, you can already create a beautiful tone which is being enhanced by your natural vibrato. So, you really have to make up your mind to attend special classes / online singing programs eg: “Brett Manning’s Mastering Vibrato” to learn how to sing vibrato the fastest way.

Having an excellent lung capacity is great for singers, athletes, etc., and at the same time, a means of preventing diseases, so, if you increase your lung capacity, that would be beneficial for your pulmonary functions. In this article, you will be provided with some guidelines for increasing your lung capacity.

Step 1: Cardiovascular Exercises

First, you have to consider performing cardiovascular exercises to strengthen and make your cardiovascular function properly and efficiently. Some of the activities involved in these forms of exercises that you need to perform regularly are walking, jogging or running, aerobic exercise, skating, cycling, skiing, dancing, swimming and rowing.

However, you should not engage in over-exercising lest you might strain your muscles or experience other physical injuries. These forms of exercises are great to increase your lung capacity because they involve consistent movements of the big muscles that trigger a strong need for oxygen in your body. When you increase your breathing rate due to exercising, you are able to put more oxygen into your lungs and therefore, you are able to increase the capacity of your lungs to some extent.

Step 2: Breathing Exercises

Second, you can render breathing exercises as another form of increasing your lung capacity. This is one of the simplest ways of increasing your lung function by lying down and relaxing. You do this by taking a deep breath and holding it for at least 10 seconds before you exhale slowly. Repeating this process for about 20 to 30 minutes everyday can surely increase your lung capacity.

Breathing techniques such as “pranayama” which is a part of “yoga” can help increase the capacity of your lungs and at the same time, a way to control your breathing. Another breathing method is called pursed lip breathing which provide benefits for your lungs by lying down in a relaxed mood while practicing this technique. Third way in increasing your lung capacity is by playing wind musical instruments.

Things like oboe, flute, tuba, saxophone, mouth organ and clarinet need an excellent lung capacity to play them with intricate music for a longer duration of time. When you have mastered playing these instruments, you can expect your lung capacity to increase, and you can also manage controlling your breathing ability. When you play these instruments, you need to employ breathing techniques that make use of the right diaphragm.

This will help you further, and in fact, you can also attain the same result in singing. So, if you’re a professional singer, you can utilize singing to increase your lung capacity.

Step 3: High Altitude Training

Third, high altitude training can be instrumental to increase the capacity of your lungs. A good example of this is the choice of some athletes to live in highly-elevated areas to train their lungs to develop more capacity. This is because oxygen level is lesser in higher altitudes compared to those areas at sea level.

So, to compensate for lack of oxygen, your body produces higher amount of hemoglobin and red blood cells. While singers aim to increase their lung capacity for singing purposes, you also need to increase your lung capacity even if you’re not a singer in order to maintain excellent health.

How Vocal Resonance Contributes to the Voice Quality in Singing?

Do you have any idea on what a vocal resonance is? It’s the process of enhancing the basic phonation product in intensity or timbre by cavities that are filled with air passing through it on its way outside. Different terminologies are associated with resonation process that includes prolongation, intensification, improvement, enlargement, enrichment and amplification.

However, in strict scientific usage, most of these terms would be questionable to acoustic authorities. In general, the significant points drawn by a singer from these terminologies is focused on the end result which is to be able to create a better sound. You’ll find 7 areas that are listed starting from the lowest to the highest as vocal resonators. These are the chest, sinuses, nasal cavity, oral cavity, pharynx, larynx and the tracheal tree.

Mentors often teach singers the correct way of “feeling” their sound to vibrate towards the bone of their chest and head. This is vocal resonance; and in music lessons, you often hear the instructions, “sing it to your cheeks, sing it to your forehead,” etc. If still they don’t feel anything vibrating in these areas, they try to imagine that the vibration is there, and as they do it continuously, eventually the feeling will come there.

If the singers feel that vibrations are not occurring in these places, they start to imagine that it’s there. One great thing that happens in this process is that singers know that bone vibrations are not very significant to the quality of the sound that they produce. However, when these vibrations have started to occur, other areas of the head also start to vibrate. Your head cavities, sinuses and other parts of the vocal cords synchronize with the vibration.

These areas add quality to your sound as it passes through them when it goes outside. But some people are wondering how the sinuses and head cavities can boost the volume and quality of the sound in producing vocal resonance. Just imagine that while singing, you’re walking along and suddenly step inside a small cave. As you sing the same way continuously, you’ll notice that your sound is becoming louder, richer and brighter.

Yet, you’re not actually doing anything about it. You’re not adding or changing anything to your voice; it just happened incidentally that you’re singing inside the cave. Considering that the cave is made of hard walls, your sound is being amplified by the space of the cave. The next thing that you can do to test your vocal resonance is imagine your voice originating from your vocal cords, and passing through a group of small caves with each one contributing something to add-up to the volume and quality of your sound.

Now, you can use sinuses to substitute for caves and from here, you’ll start to realize how vocal resonance arises. As you start thinking or imagining that your sound is vibrating in your head, those small caves start to do their own magic. Now you can feel that your voice is resonating through your chest and head. But don’t confuse vocal resonance with the head voice because it deals with sound vibration whereas head voice characterizes the head register.

Your voice in singing is affected by a number of factors that include your well-being, frame of mind, good and bad habits that affect your vocal voice practice, and environmental factors. Among these factors, the most important one that affects your voice in singing is your vocal health. Hereunder you will find some tips that you can use as guidelines in taking care of your vocal health.

1) Don’t Overuse Your Voice

First, don’t overuse your voice as much as possible to the point that it’s almost sounding like hoarse. Learn to relax your voice whenever you use it with less tension and effort. In voice training, you must be able to sing at least 3 to 4 hours each day without weakening your voice for tomorrow’s use. If you are unable to sing with this duration of time without debilitating your voice, then, it’s time to reevaluate your present speaking habits or singing styles.

2) Frequency of Speaking and Singing

Second, bear in mind that your inherent vocal capacity to endure weakening can be attributed to the degree of your singing activities and frequency of speaking that you can do per day.

3)Singing Pitch Ranges

Third, whenever you perform vocal voice practice, don’t sing continuously in a high or low pitch range that is almost at your maximum range capacity.

4) Warm-up Before Singing Performance

Fourth, if you overuse or misuse your voice, it can be regarded as a vocal suicide. So, before you use your voice in special occasions like dramatic or public speaking, you should first perform a warm-up.

Just like in any other forms of physical exercise, warming-up in vocal voice practice should be done starting from ordinary stretching, moving to less strenuous, and towards more strenuous exercise. High range and loud volume are the most difficult and strenuous things to do, so, you should start singing at mid-range in an easy way.

For every stage performance that you do, assess your existing vocal condition first, and make an adjustment to your rehearsals accordingly. In general, warming-up your voice for a minimum of 7 to 10 minutes before you render a performance is a good vocal practice.

5) Resting Your Voice

Fifth, before performing in a concert, one good vocal voice practice is reducing the usage of your voice. Be silent in the vehicle while you’re on the way to the concert. This way, you’re not only resting your voice, but also conserving your energy in preparation for a big event.

6) Don’t Laugh Aloud, Scream / Shout

Sixth, while preparing for the concert, don’t laugh aloud, scream or shout. As much as possible, if you have to sneeze or cough, do it gently without using your voice.

If you experience the following voice conditions, then, you could have abused your voice. First, your throat becomes tender as you touch it after use. At the end of your singing, your voice becomes hoarse. Your throat becomes extremely dry with a noticeable dryness in your lips. If this is the case, you should check and remedy your dehydration. With the above tips in conducting proper vocal voice practices, you can be assured to have a kind of voice that is well-taken cared of.

By this time, you should already be aware that vocal resonance exercises help in enhancing the basic phonation product in its intensity or timbre through air-filled cavities. There are a lot of terms that are used to describe vocal resonance, but of most of them are still doubtful in the eyes of acoustic experts. While changing the shape and size of a resonance cavity also changes your vocal tone, it becomes more visible that effective control of articulation and correct pronunciation of words have great effects in singing.

Here are 3 important exercises that you can follow to boost your vocal resonance.

Vocal Resonance Exercises 1: Determine Your Favorite Vowel

First, you should be able to determine your most favorite vowel and your least one. Your favored vowels are usually the ones that you find easy to sing in high pitch ranges while the least ones are those that give you a hard time in singing on all pitch ranges.

When you have determined your favored vowels, use them to your great advantage. First thing that you have to do to practice these vocal resonance exercises is to sing using these vowels. Then, you can do the same procedure on other vowels until they become easy like your favorite vowels. You may experience too much time and effort practicing these exercises, but if you can do it efficiently with one vowel, all the rest will follow easily.

Vocal Resonance Exercises 2: Shaping Your Mouth

Second, learning the concept involved in shaping your mouth can be of great help. If you can use it to control your voice resonance instead of just making it follow the vowels when you’re singing, that could be greater. Practice it by yawning; observe that huge space that is available in your mouth. In this process, your brain dictates its wide opening to allow the entry of more air.

If you’re aiming to become an professional singer, you need to perform regular vocal resonance exercises by simple yawning where a big space is being widened uncontrollably without necessarily forcing it. The wider that you’re able to open that space at the back of your throat, the more it will become easier for you to reach all those resonating cavities.

Therefore, practice your lips and mouth in forming the shapes necessary to sing the vowels and consonants with great ease. But in doing this, make sure that you maintain the shape and size of your mouth consistently.

Vocal Resonance Exercises 3: Dexterity with Tension on Face

Third, develop appropriate dexterity without any tension on your face, jaw and lips. Practice vocal resonance techniques often to provide your facial muscles with a warm-up exercise.

You should also perform lip diction exercise such as singing with different vowels and consonants, and tongue twisters. In performing these exercises, bear in mind that the more you’re able to control your facial muscles, you can have more control over your diction. At this point, there’s a rule that you can follow in doing these vocal resonance exercises – if you have no control over your voice, there will be tension, and where there’s tension, it’s revealed in the tone of your voice.

If you possess a poor singing posture, it’s not only your physical health which is affected, but also your voice. The negative effects of having a poor posture are causing a lot of difficulties in the major systems of your body. Aside from physiological effect, the tone and quality of your voice as a vocalist can also be greatly affected.

Correct posture is considered as a fundamental factor in singing that you have to correct immediately to avoid other problems that it may cause. However, it may be hard for a lot of vocalists to undergo remedies for this problem because it is not the same with other singing techniques and exercises that you normally perform. Proper training of posture in singing requires you to do it beyond the normal vocal performances or practices.

There are several reasons why you should possess a good singing posture. If you don’t practice this, your chest cavity will be compressed that puts pressure on your diaphragm and restricts your chest to expand. If your chest cavity is not allowed to expand, your breath will stay in your upper chest cavity that enables you only to have a shallow “breath.” Therefore, your ability to access the maximum supply of your breath support becomes limited.

Another bad effect of improper posture is that it obstructs the projection of a vocalist. You will notice that when a singer becomes misaligned in her posture while singing, her voice is projected downward that cause the sound waves to hit the floor directly where they become distorted and refracted. If you want to acquire and maintain the proper and correct singing posture, you should train your muscles at your neck, shoulders, chest and back to align properly.

Remember that keeping a good posture is not an easy thing to do. Very few countries and societies establish a campaign against poor posture. The fact is that it is so easy for you to move out of correct alignment without you noticing it. This article will provide you with some ways of assessing if you’re taking the right posture in singing. Try standing barefoot on a surface that is smooth and flat.

In this position, you have to stand with your feet flat on the ground, arms placed at your sides, and palms facing forward. Stand up in a slow manner with your tip on your toes, your shoulders slightly moving back, and your back is making an arch shape. As you maintain this feeling, you have to gently lower your back towards your heels, and this physical movement gives you a good singing posture eventually.

You may find doing this position a bit awkward at first because your muscles have already been used and trained to poor posture previously that caused your muscles to become hard. When you’re trying to correct your poor posture, you have to train your muscles at your shoulders and at the back to move on the right way instead of drooping. This may take you sometime to perfect the procedure, but in due time, you can reform your muscles to get back to a good singing posture after training them.

One of the most important features of the singing breathing techniques is AIR. The singers should know how to control how they breathe or else they will become fatigued fast and as a result their singing will be hindered. The exercises produce results immediately and you will improve your performance permanently if you practice these techniques daily. I have not yet come across a singer, despite the style they use, who was not able to make an immediate improvement by following these breathing exercises.

Many people in the course of their lives inhale to the upper lungs in such a way that the chest and shoulders go up. When air is in the upper lungs, you lack the detailed control that is required. A singer, runner, swimmer or any person who is in need of controlling their air, needs to make sure that their lower lungs is filled. According to singing breathing techniques, rather than a vertical breath with the body upwardly expanding, your breath should be horizontal with an outward expansion.

One of the singing breathing techniques you need to be aware of when you are on the microphone is that the abdomen should be kept tight (picture yourself with a piano and you are going to lift it), your throat should be relaxed (as though you are yawning), letting the movement of enough air. In case you require higher notes you can get these with more air and not squeezing the neck muscles (a mistake commonly made by singers who run out of breath way before they are ready to call it quits. You can experiment this by imagining yourself seeing a friend of yours across any busy street and you want to get his or her attention. Shout out “hey” You will notice that you are able to do this when relaxed with plenty of air. This is how notes that are on the edge should be hit; a relaxed throat and air being pushed out using the abdomen.

One final comment: though you may or may not believe it, TALKING strains your voice more than SINGING does (if the singing is being done right). As a matter of fact, Broadway singers have signed a contract that they will not say a single word on the day the show is scheduled until the end of the performance. So if you are interested in being a successful and professional singer, you have to apply the singing breathing techniques; that is know how to focus, shut up and then sing!

After putting air in its right place, you need to know how to control it using the diaphragm. A diaphragm is a type of muscle that is found below the lungs and plays the major role of filling and emptying the lungs. When you exhale all the air from the lungs you will be able to feel the diaphragm below the rib cage being pushed up against the lungs. Outside the ribs you will feel the abdominal wall being pushed in, whereas inside the ribs the diaphragm is being pushed up. The diaphragm is not only supposed to be strong so that it is able to push hard if you want plenty of power, it also needs to have strength and control if you are singing an accurate and fast lick or a great jump in pitch or very quietly. Building the diaphragm’s control and strength is one of the initial singing breathing techniques you have to learn.

Techniques to Shaping Your Voice Culture for Singing

The method used for the control of your singing voice is referred to as voice culture for singing. It involves scientific and traditional methods to enhance voice quality.

Voice Culture Techniques in Singing

Singing Voice culture integrates several other features in which voice fields would need to be trained. For instance the mouth shape, good word pronunciation, voice adjustment for various speeds, tempos. In addition there is the control of amplitude and volume depending on the background that is being used for presentation, vowel pronunciation as well as improvising which is a very important aspect.

Voice culture for singing is supposed to be trained in accordance with the category of singing that a person chooses, for instance semi-classical, classical, rock, pop and folk among others. The reason for this is that every kind of music has its own demands in terms of voice production and style. Males and females have got distinctively different organs for producing organs. Therefore the training techniques are bound to be different.

The voice could be the only natural instrument for music. Everyone has their special techniques therefore; all voices vary from one person to another. It is vital to establish that it is only this instrument that cultured, improved and cultivated though pitch variation, tonal quality (timbre), intensity as well as the features mentioned above.

4 fundamental guidelines for Voice culture for singing include:

Practice

Hearing

Mental and Physical fitness

Breath Control

Hearing
Simulation happens to be the initial step to learning and the same applies to vocal training. A key requirement is to involve listen keenly and by doing this, one’s brain makes up and maintains a mental picture of music. This includes the tunes, notes, speed, rhythm, volume, lyrics, voice tonal quality instruments and many others.

Breathe Control
This aspect is imperative when moving towards Voice culture for singing. If we could control out breath then we could simply master our singing voices. Control of breath offers steadiness clarity as well as good voice phonation.

Practice
Every person knows that practice makes perfect therefore the practice should be separated into 2 types:

1. Attempting what we are unable to do but wish to sing
2. Going over what we know and ensuring that it is perfected.

By constantly practicing the system of muscles and the whole system of voice production are physically trained. These exercises differ according to the genre of music which is sung. Voice aspects such as pitch control, articulation, and phonation also vary with the form of music. The time allocation for practice is not standard and is mainly dependent on the singers’ performance. With classical music there is plenty of improvisation which is integrated into the performance. For this reason a lot more time should be devoted. In such a case the Voice culture for singing practice sessions could even take up to three hour at a time.

Vocal fry register singing technique is the preliminary vibration of vocal cords. When you send a little air to the vocal cords, they start to pulsate gently. If the air pressure is increased, you are able to get an entire tone easily.

Therefore it is obvious that not much air is required to execute vocal fry register singing.

Vocal fry happens to be initial sound that you emit the moment you get up. Your right, the one that goes “AHHHH!”.

Say “Ahhhh” using the least amount of air and by little I mean the least. You are will hardly hear a sound at all. However the sound that will come out …

It is actually quite simple for you to comprehend what the vocal fry happens to be and its sound. It is important for:

1. Adding some style to ones singing

2. Adding a forceful ‘buzz’ to ones singing voice. This is a great effect especially for rock music.

3. Vocal fry can be used to emit a terrifying scream if you prefer. This is not harmful for to your voice when this technique is used.

Vocal fry register singing (which is also referred to as pulse phonation, creak, pulse register, glottal fry, laryngealisation, strohbass, glottal scrape or glottal rattle) it happens to be least vocal register and it is produced by a slack glottal closure that allows air to flow through with a rattling or popping sound which has a low frequency.

The average basic frequency of the vibration through vocal fry register is approximately 36.4 Hertz. On the other hand the lowest area of this register could stretch in certain instances to about 20 to 50 pulses in a second. This is approximately 2 octaves lower than the bottom area of the nominal voice or modal voice register. Just like any particular vocal register, vocal fry register singing has a distinct pattern of vibration for the vocal folds as well as a number of pitches with a particular sound that is unique from other voice registers.

Vocal Fry Register Singing

This fry register is commonly used by singers although it does not seem that apparent on the surface of things. On the bass section of a gospel quartet it is rather common to hear it.

The main use of a vocal fry register singing technique is to get low frequency pitches that cannot be achieved by a singer within a modal register. Though the physical emission of a vocal fry register could be stretched until a modal register, many vocal pedagogues dissuade this practice because it is likely to cause injury to vocal cords. Many vocal trainers deter singers from making use of vocal fry registers on a regular basis because it is likely to make a singer to damage certain upper notes within a modal register. In certain instances, voice pedagogues have discovered that using vocal fry in a therapeutic manner is helpful for those that may not be able to easily produce the lower notes. Extreme tension within the laryngeal muscles as well as the support system could lead to excessive breath pressure and this is the main hindrance to vocal fry register singing.
