Is falsetto the same as head voice?

Comparing head voice VS falsetto, the big difference between the two is that falsetto is considered as the lightest kind of voice produced by a human being.  This voice is very limited in tonal variation, dynamics and strength.  Usually, a considerable break, jump, or disconnection between your falsetto and chest voice is tagged as the great difference between the two.

In relation to this, a well-known voice therapist and vocal coach named Randy Buescher of Chicago describes falsetto as a kind of coordination in voice production where the external layer or muscular covering of your vocal cord or mucosa is producing sound and vibrating without involving the real musculature of your cord. At the same time, this process does not involve medial compression.

Comparing head voice VS falsetto, the cords do not completely approximate at the time of vibratory cycle in falsetto, while in the head voice, your vocal cords fully approximate.  However, the cord vibration shifts away from the depth of your chest voice into a type of pattern involving lesser depth of your vocal cord as you rise to the highest range of your voice.

As you ascend to your highest range of notes, this process will only involve your vocal ligament.

There is a great difference between head voice VS falsetto which will be discussed in this article in order to correct the belief that they are almost the same.  A lot of people misinterpret this concept and encounter the mistake of distinguishing one with the other and often calling one the same as the other without any distinguishing point.  When a singer is trying to sing a song which is beyond his range, this is called falsetto.

In simple terms, what is falsetto?

The literal meaning of falsetto is “false voice.”  If you want to determine whether you’re creating a falsetto sound or not, try to male sure you hear a very airy sound.  Supposing that when you ascend in voice your tone shifts from being clear and firm to becoming airy, then that is falsetto.

The airy tone can be easily detected in falsetto because of the manner it’s being created by the vocal cords.  So, if we compare head voice VS falsetto, it is in falsetto that the small vocal folds are getting closer to one another causing the edges to produce a vibration as the air moves between them.  However, even if they are getting closer, they are definitely not in contact with each other.

The BeeGees is one of the most popular bands that use falsetto regularly.  This style in singing is also often utilized by back-up singers.  Falsetto is a light and airy use of the vocal cords that does not have bottom connection, and no tone and color.  In the [click to continue…]

3 Factors on How to Extend Vocal Range Effectively

Singer extend her vocal rang to hit very high pitch in singing. Many singers are not aware that it’s possible to extend vocal range higher than their maximum capacity to sing.  The fact is that if you are able to sing at your maximum in a “connected voice,” ( It’s called “Mixed Voice” sometimes) then, you can also possibly sing more than 3 octaves.  Another good thing in connected voice singing is that the quality of the tone in your voice becomes consistent in your entire vocal range.  Here, there’s no need to have sudden breaks, changes or pop-ins.

It’s like having a voice in one instrument; not a couple or several different instruments.  This is of course beneficial to singers, but the problem is how to start the process if one doesn’t know the procedure in shortening the vocal cords.  You can do this by performing the right vocal exercises.  One way to achieve this is learning the process of singing within the natural limits of your vocal range without being distracted with obvious changes in technique or quality.
