Every person has a kind of singing voice that is unique, however, everyone can control and developing singing tone through regular practice. Tone in singing is the sound quality that you create, commonly described as pure, clear, mellow or husky. In this aspect, several factors are concerned; namely, the size and shape of your vocal cords, nose, throat and mouth.

Singers commonly pursue a good mix of chest and head voice to obtain a good singing tone. The topic on developing singing voice has already been tackled in past articles, but you will notice that today, it still seems to be misunderstood by some people such as the balancing of tonal brilliance and depth of resonance.
In performing this process, singers usually combine the use of their head voice and chest in order to produce a great singing tone.

However, this combination of chest voice and the head voice causes confusion and frustration for both amateur and professional singers. But once you can do it without any difficulty through constant practice, you’ll be amazed to find out that it’s possible to make it automatic just like in ordinary speech with expression.

However, you have the ability to control your voice in a relaxed and open manner that your throat is reacting. Also involved in this process is which part of your head or throat your voice resonates, and how you are able to control your breath well. Controlling your breath enables you to render a rich, full tone in the widest range possible.

The process of developing singing voice using the combination of your chest and head voice is a great way of singing and producing the best singing tone. So, if you’re aiming to achieve a great singing tone, you can attain it by getting the most appropriate vocal exercises that will train you how to sing properly using your chest and head voice.

Exercises on Controlling Singing Tone

You can control your singing tone by standing up straight. Then, fill your lungs with air in a very deep manner that you have to push out your ribs, while pushing down your diaphragm. Maintain your ribs in an outward position, while your shoulders and diaphragm are in downward position, and letting the air flow out in a slow manner.

In controlling your singing tone, you should relax your larynx and throat, and keep up your breath support. A lot of singers feel easy going to a range between 16 to 20 notes, beginning G beneath middle C for soprano and mezzo-soprano singers. For alto and tenor vocal singers, they go in C beneath middle C, while for baritones, it’s the next A below, and for basses, they use the next F below.

Exercises on Developing Singing Tone

You should practice this activity daily before you perform singing in order to strengthen your diaphragm and build-up your lung capacity. Then, try to identify your voice range by accompanying yourself with a piano, guitar or a keyboard. Start playing while singing middle C note on a piano. Now, you can perform singing downwards in a note by note process, going to the lowest note that your voice can reach and hold.

You will notice how it sounds whenever you sing a resonant, full tone at different pitches. In identifying resonance, try to visualize the air spinning in your throat, nose and mouth chambers that are resonating. Keep on practicing until you are able to hit this tone. Using the piano as guide, try to sing scales in order to train yourself in singing to the right tune.

Developing Singing Tone in High Notes

In singing high notes, using your singing tone, you can utilize your diaphragm in pushing the air up to your head. In doing this, you should open your throat constantly because the moment you squeeze your breath with your larynx, it will create a sound that seems being forced. When you feel like there is gathering of tone in your chest, it could be used effectively in stabilizing high notes.

You can overcome breathiness by practicing how to shape up clear vowel sounds, and building up controlled, deep breathing. You can encounter the problem of restricting the spaces used for breathing in order to resonate, that is why it is important that you open your throat constantly, and relax your tongue to produce an excellent singing tone.

Using Mixed Voice in Developing Singing Voice

Keep in mind that the ability of your resonators is of great importance to your singing voice. If you listen to different singers having high singing voices, you will notice that each of them delivers a unique vocal quality.

In performing this procedure, you can try experimenting on this simple exercise so that you can realize the resonating power of your head that comes from its different parts. But in performing this exercise, you should look for a quiet place. Now, you can start it by having your finger tap gently the bone, which is located between your upper lip and nose.

At this point, you can hear the light sound of thump, which is being produced. After that, use the same finger in tapping your nose bridge. Next is tapping your forehead that is beneath your hairline while you listen to the sound of thumping that is being produced.

Hope you found the ways on developing singing tone easily from this article.

There is a great difference between head voice VS falsetto which will be discussed in this article in order to correct the belief that they are almost the same. A lot of people misinterpret this concept and encounter the mistake of distinguishing one with the other and often calling one the same as the other without any distinguishing point. When a singer is trying to sing a song which is beyond his range, this is called falsetto.

The BeeGees is one of the most popular bands that use falsetto regularly. This style in singing is also often utilized by back-up singers. Falsetto is a light and airy use of the vocal cords that does not have bottom connection, and no tone and color. In the connection process, falsetto has no connection to the chest register. This is the reason why the phrase “flipping into falsetto” is commonly being used in the world of music.

Here, your voice hits an obvious shift from chest voice towards falsetto without any connection. On the other hand, head voice refers to the solid link of your vocal cords to the chest voice with transparent tone and color. In the process of connection, your head voice can easily link itself to your chest register since it does not experience vocal compression or loss of vocal cord closure. When proper training is done, you will not notice any difference between head voice and falsetto because they begin to form only one voice.

A lot of people in the music industry try to mix the 2 together, but these types of voices in singing can be hardly mixed together since they differ greatly with each other. It require very focus and advanced trainings in order to mix the head voice and falsetto voice together. You can find out more about it in Mastering Mix in this kind of expertise. However, if you are able to train your voice properly, your falsetto will start to come out naturally like your head voice. But remember that when you have properly trained your head voice, you’ll realize the big difference with head voice VS falsetto.

You will observe that head voice is livelier in tone as compared to falsetto. It works with the vocal cords to a great extent, while in head voice your vocal cords are shut down together creating a fuller sound as compared to falsetto that has separate cords. In general, it takes a big amount of time to train, discover and launch your head voice. So, if you don’t have any vocal training at all, it’s better for you to use falsetto vocal.

It’s only advisable to use the head voice if you have already gained a solid technical foundation concerning your vocal cords. This is the major difference between head voice VS falsetto that you should take note to avoid distinguishing one with the other. Moving from falsetto to head voice may be possible at all after a thorough training and practice, or you can also use falsetto in increasing your head voice’s strength.

Now that you have learned the great difference between head voice VS falsetto and their correct application, you can start using falsetto while you’re enrolled in a head voice training program.

3 Factors on How to Extend Vocal Range Effectively

Many singers are not aware that it’s possible to extend vocal range higher than their maximum capacity to sing. The fact is that if you are able to sing at your maximum in a “connected voice,” ( It’s called “Mixed Voice” sometimes) then, you can also possibly sing more than 3 octaves. Another good thing in connected voice singing is that the quality of the tone in your voice becomes consistent in your entire vocal range. Here, there’s no need to have sudden breaks, changes or pop-ins.

It’s like having a voice in one instrument; not a couple or several different instruments. This is of course beneficial to singers, but the problem is how to start the process if one doesn’t know the procedure in shortening the vocal cords. You can do this by performing the right vocal exercises. One way to achieve this is learning the process of singing within the natural limits of your vocal range without being distracted with obvious changes in technique or quality.

Vocalists say that as a singer, you can only extend vocal range if all of the physical aspects required in singing are working together effectively such as breathe support, articulatory movement, resonance adjustment and laryngeal action. Most of the vocal mentors teach that these processes can be coordinated properly by expanding the range slowly, and creating good habits in vocal usage that complement the tessitura of your voice comfortably.

Here are 3 important factors that affect your ability to extend vocal range in a lower or higher pitch.

Energy Factor- First is the energy factor that has several connotations. Its most common meaning is the general response of your body to a sound. It can also refer to the dynamic relationship of your breathing-in muscles towards your breathing-out muscles called breath support mechanism. Energy factor can also involve your level of breath pressure transmitted to the vocal folds, its resistance to the existing pressure, and to the dynamic degree of the sound.

Space Factor- Second factor that is needed to extend vocal range is the space factor. This refers to the size of your mouth, and the corresponding condition of your larynx and palate. In general point of view, you should open your mouth wider as you sing higher notes. You can also widen the internal position or space of your larynx and soft palate when y ou relax your throat. This is more described by vocal experts as similar to “yawning.”

Vocal Tone Quality Factor- Third is the depth factor which has 2 connotations. One is referring to the actual physical sensitivity of depth in your body, and another is the vocal mechanism along with mental concept of depth which is associated with the quality of the vocal tone. To have a recap of these 3 factors in simple terms, just think of one basic rule that involves all of these factors.

When you sing higher notes, you should exert more energy, more space, and more depth. When you sing lower notes, you should reduce your energy, space and depth. If you follow these tips on how to extend vocal range, you’ll feel more relaxed and comfortable doing it regularly as needed.

If you search the internet, you’ll find a lot of terms related to singing, informing people about the way to sing correctly and how to sing in mixed voice. Since there may be some people who are not aware about the definition of the term mixed voice, you’ll find it in reading this article. Mixed voice refers to the combination of chest voice and head voice, which is considered as a strong and subtle aspect of singing.

In this process, proper techniques are utilized that includes correct usage of the vocal chord, breath control and proper posture. If you want to learn singing in mixed voice, you should know first what chest and head voices mean. In chest voice, tenors sing using almost their entire body to reach the notes. In rendering the notes, they make use of their lungs, diaphragm, as well as their legs and arms.

Head voice differs greatly with chest voice in the sense that you can use it even while you are seated or lying down. If you want to learn how to sing in mixed voice, you should have the ability to use both of these voices instantly. Most of pop singers use this kind of voice including Britney Spears who is categorized as a head voice singer. By using mixed voice, pop singers are able to perform on stage with great power and a big voice.

To enable you to sing in front of a huge crowd together with a loud band, you should be able to perform well with a mixed voice so that you’ll have stage confidence and at the same time, the audience can hear you. Here are some of the steps on how to sing in mixed voice. First, is learning to sing at top and below your vocal range using several scale exercises.

Take note what types of notes you are singing with the use of your lower voice or chest, and which ones do you sing through your head voice. Second is identifying your vocal bridge. These are the notes that make it difficult for you to sing in a relaxed manner coming from the head voice or chest. Third, make a trial with different vocal activities by singing the notes within your bridge range. Try singing each note on various vowel sounds.

Fourth step on how to sing in mixed voice is vocalizing the vowel sounds that create the resonance in the bridge zone. Find the range of your middle voice by singing the notes of the range chest out, and focused more into your face. Move the placement for higher notes coming from the head voice towards your mouth. Good resonance is achieved by the correct placement of your middle voice.

Fifth and last method in using mixed voice in singing is through adding of words in the music sound that you’re trying to create, and integrate them into full melody. These methods on how to sing in mixed voice are what most music mentors recommend to singers whether beginners or professional.

However, if you really want to master the skills of advanced Mixed voice in more professional way like most of the artists and pop singers did. You shouldn’t miss out the “Advanced Mastering Mix” DVD Course created by Singing Success.

From around the 14th century many individuals and more so males have been involved in singing falsetto, singing head voice. This kind of breathy and flute-like tones can be heard in various genres of music including Irish folk music, African rhythms, cowboy yodeling, and Acapella choirs for males, Hawaiian music, modern rock and many others. So what can be stated as the difference between falsetto and head voice?

The sharper tones of falsetto go beyond head voice or normal vocals. This is done by solely vibrating the external creases of the singers’ vocal cords which actually blows them apart. During this process, the actual muscles of the vocal cords are not used in any way. The final result is a very light vocal sound which is made with the human voice and one that is completely different from the normal speaking voice. The falsetto voice has a great distinctive quality; however, it may have some limitations in terms of tonal expression variety, dynamics and strength.

The head voice involves the use of a decreasing vocal cord depth as one goes for the higher vocal ranges. It has a more complex wave and therefore could have increased tonal color and might be louder. For those people who have an interest in head voice or falsetto, they need to get involved in an intense training which will help in avoiding any damage to vocal cords. Unprofessional or unqualified singers of falsetto could essentially get to a point where their own vocal cords are no able to fully close ever again. Alternatively, falsetto singers could get the chance to hit high notes and generally expand their vocal ranges.

For anyone who intends to showcase their talent at an audition or in order to get a round of applause while singing karaoke, discipline and practice has to be included into one’s regime. The body consists of a system of muscles which includes the constituents of vocal cords. Whichever one that is most preferable, whether singing Falsetto, singing head voice or any other range, training will improve performance. An internet based course or expert vocal coach could offer more insight into the improvement of general vocal quality.

Making the Voice Better
There are certain activities that could be carried out to improve the singing voice more so if a singer is using either head voice or falsetto and requires an extensive range in the process. By training the vocal muscles using different scales will ensure the expansion of both upper and lower ranges. It may not seem very interesting however; the standard vocal methods will work notwithstanding the singing style that is used. As the throat and mind develop and the theory of music is studied, the main aim when singing Falsetto, singing head voice or any other style is to ensure that the style is unique and entertaining.

It is about time to take the big step and take up a powerful online singing program if you need to develop your voice or maybe you dream of becoming a television or stage performer, hence vocal exercises to improve singing can also be essential.

Practice breathing for some days as well as vocal training exercises in some quiet place which could be in your home, or you can copy it onto a CD, hence you can practice in the car as you go to work. When you are just starting with the lessons, avoid training in the presence of other people since they might be very critical, this might dishearten you as a result you may fail to pursue your dream.

You will be blown away by how fast your voice will improve since you practice vowel sounds, arpeggios, breathing and scales.

Subsequently if your voice improves because of singing exercises, then it maybe appropriate for you to download some Karaoke files or Backing tracks which you can easily find on the web and you can easily them in an MIDI format using your computer. There is another option you can opt of downloading free Karaoke players for instance the one provided by VanBasco. The Karaoke Player can let you change the tempo or pitch of your song. Majority of MIDI files have melodies that can be muted afterward if you practice more.

After you have gained a bit of confidence, then it implies it is the right time to call a professional or qualified tutor to your area. The singing tutor will guide you through the steps which follow and will improve your singing and maybe make you the next American or Pop Idol, hence creating CDs of your own, performing just like a SUPERSTAR on the stage and even TV! Or you could be proud of the fact that you downloaded the vocal exercises to improve singing and it worked for your voice. Wish you the best, though keep practicing, aim higher and you will be very close to achieving the ultimate goals in your life!

Effective Singing Exercises That Will Improve Your Singing Skills
For you to able to sing with a speech level, you must avoid using your inner larynx muscles at first, and then relax your outer larynx muscles. If you carry out as instructed above, then singing can be easy like talking, regardless of the note you maybe singing…

…Therefore singing at a speech level!

Hence, how will you learn singing as the speech level?

Where does the answer lie? You have guessed it right…the answer is within the new singing method…Speech Level Singing! This singing speech level technique is a combination of various powerful exercises which will develop unbelievable results from your voice.

A particular technique in this program transforms the whole Speech Level Singing course into a detailed, systematic training course. This technique is recommended by several Grammy award winning stars.

The singing vocal techniques used to enhance your vocal range are very complex. But, It can be achieved if you master these vocal training skills well.

Articulation and production of sounds and words in the form of music or in a specific tune is called singing. An artiste who sings is called a singer or a vocalist. Songs can be sung in two ways. As a Cappella, that is singing without accompaniment and Orchestra and that is singing accompanied by other musical instruments. In the singing vocal techniques, this can range from a single instrument accompanist like a piano, or an entire orchestra; and the singers can be single, duet or group/band or choral. Almost everyone who can speak can sing, since singing is only a form of sustained speech which comes out in the form of a tune. Singing is very often done with a group of other musicians, such as in a choir with different voice ranges such as tenor, soprano, alto and bass.

A singer can fall in in any range mentioned above and most singers can be very comfortable in one range but can sing some of the other ranges too. Particular to improve your singing vocal techniques, sometimes people are unaware that they can actually improve and enhance their vocal range by following certain techniques. Even though there are limitations to increase in vocal range, there is certainly scope for improvement.

Let me give you a few guidelines to follow which will help enhance your voice quality:
1. Practice singing everyday and if this is tough, then at least five day a week. Early morning practice is generally suggested to open up your voice thoroughly.

2. Do a warm up session for a few minutes before you start singing. Stretch your vocal chords by singing “aah” “mah” “doh” “mee” and such sounds in the three different registers, low, medium and high. Hold the sound in each scale as long as you can.

3. Select a song which falls in the highest register which you can manage and practice it two or three times. Sing in a relaxed manner, take long and deep breaths and hit all the top notes correctly. After a few days you will be able to do this easily without stretching your vocal chords. Then you should choose a song with a higher scale in order to practice your vocal singing techniques.

4. Similarly choose a song which has a low register which you can just barely sing. Sing it two or three times everyday till you become comfortable singing the song and you are able to reach the low notes and it is audible. After that choose another song with a lower scale to practice with.

Some Do’s and Don’ts of Singing Vocal Techniques to Increase Vocal Range:-
5. Try not to consume dairy products. They are heavy on the stomach and also form a coating in your vocal chords. Both result in breathlessness while singing.

6. All singers are advised to take warm fluids like tea or warm water before singing and in frequent intervals during a performance since it prevents dryness of throat.

7. Do not be tempted to push a note which you cannot sing. These results in voice cracking and the song will fall apart. It will also limit your vocal range.

8. Warm water with a teaspoon of honey and a dash of lime is good for your voice. Gargling with warm salt water helps in clearing your throat of phlegm and scratches.

9. Lastly, enjoy what you do. The more you enjoy your singing the more expressive it will be.

Hope these singing vocal techniques will improve your vocal range dramatically.

Six Easy Steps to Breathe from Diaphragm and Sing Well

Your vocal chords are like that of a musical instrument. While singing you need to have full control of your voice to hold notes properly and for a long time, bring dynamics into your voice to express the intended feeling, and to sing without a break or crack in your voice. This can be achieved only if you build and strengthen your vocal chords with breathing from your diaphragm.

Diaphragm is the muscle below your lungs and just above your stomach which controls inhaling and exhaling of breath. You must have often heard people say things like, ” Breathe from your diaphragm when you sing”. You might have wondered why people say that when you know you are supposed breathe with the help of your lungs.

What they actually mean is proper breathing is a major requirement for proper singing. Once you develop breath control, you will be able hold long notes, improve your tonal quality and throw your voice to a larger distance. As babies all of us are born with correct breathing capabilities. That is why a child’s wail can be heard at a long distance even when its lungs are so tiny. Since as children we do not know the wrong way of breathing our voice resonates and can be heard loudly and clearly. It is as we grow up that we take shallow breaths from the top part of our lungs resulting in voice breaking and gasping at even a little effort.

Steps on how to Sing from Your Diaphragm:-
Step 1- Learn the muscle movements associated with singing. The diaphragm is a muscle at the bottom of the solar plexus which moves to pull and push air into and out of your lungs. Shallow breathing is done with the top of the lungs leaving no work for the diaphragm and half used lungs resulting in short breaths. So practice to breathe deeply from the diaphragm.

Step 2- Sit or stand erect while singing. A hunched posture will not allow you to breathe from your diaphragm. Hunched postures cause restriction of air movement damaging the delivery of your song.

Step 3 – Proper Posture. Your feet while standing should be shoulder width apart, your back straight and your chin parallel to the floor. Tilting your head back while singing will strain your vocal chords and hinder free flow of air.

Step 4 – Breathing Exercises. Even as you practice singing every day, you must practice breathing for at least ten minutes. Sit on a rug on the floor with legs folded, your hands resting lightly on your knees. Inhale slowly till you feel the air reaching your stomach expanding it . Hold the breath as you count ten in your mind. Then exhale as slowly as you inhaled. This exercise is a must for any aspiring singer.

Step 5 – Check breathing while singing. Keep your palm on your solar plexus when you start singing simple scales. If you are breathing properly then you will feel you palm being propelled outward with your stomach movement. Only this can help you get control over your voice and improve your singing technique.

Step 6 - Sing with an open mouth. Just as we realize the need to take deep breath, we should also allow air to flow out freely while singing. So it is important to sing with you mouth open and your throat muscles relaxed. This helps in proper diction, voice throwing and volume control.

Voice vibrato as the name suggests is when the voice vibrates to give more expression to the song. This effect is produced in the voice when singing and the same effect is given by a pulsation in the pitch in an instrument. The “depth of vibrato” is characterized by the amount of pitch variation created and the “speed of vibrato” is characterized by the speed with which the pitch is varied.

Vocal vibrato is actually produced by oscillation of the vocal chords from an open pharynx/throat with good support from the muscles at the throat and firm control in the opening and closing of your vocal chords. If done properly vibrato can be very pleasing to the ear and adds loads of expression and dynamics to the music.

Vocal vibrato is a mastery of voice which has to be perfected well before using it while singing. Unfortunately there are several singers who try to produce this effect without mastering this special skill. When this happens, the oscillation is sometimes too slow and this sound is called a “wobble” and if it is too fast it is called a “tremolo” and both are awful to hear.

While learning how to sing vibrato, singers who sing producing a wide and slow vibrato are actually doing a wobble. This happens due to lack of focus on the singing and lack of breath control and breath pressure. Wobble can sometimes be caused due to lack of correct adduction of vocal chords.

Tremolo is caused by over pressure at the root of the tongue. This is due to a tendency to speed up and finish singing, breathlessness and lack of voice control. Tremolo is even recognized as a sort of voice trembling due to lack of confidence levels or improper physical health. Tremolo can happen to singers who alcohol and drug abusers.

Sometimes some singers produce uneven vibrato. The vocal chords may move apart and vibrate unnaturally. This happens when there is a change in flow of even air pressure through your system. This can be rectified by regular practice and deep breathing exercise to clear you passage and strengthen the voice support muscles.

Some singers can produce a vibrato from their diaphragm aptly named as diaphragmatic vibrato. This is when the diaphragm pulsates during a sustained note to give a fake vibrato sound. Some theatrical singers develop this habit when they are unable to master a correct vibrato in their voice and they want to get away with some sort of a vibrato sound. This is a habit which cannot be rectified easily since the abdominal muscles memorize the pulsating sensation and develop muscle memory. However even this can be corrected over a period of time with determination.

A good vibrato can be very pleasing to the ears. A good vibrato is when the singing voice is vibrating at an even pleasant rate. Learning how to sing vibrato can be developed with proper vocal exercises, regular practice and when the singer achieves proper balance in support muscles. The three “D” of music namely determination, diligence and drive will help you achieve the vibrato power you ever dream of.

Singing in the high register or singing high notes is natural and many singers have a habit of doing so whichever background or society they hail from. This is probably because high notes give more expression to your feelings. You are able to emote better in high note singing than while singing in the low register. Well, it is very common amongst people to shout with joy, or anger or desperation. While that is talking, singers in much the same manner express by singing in high notes.

It is common knowledge that almost all singers like to sing in high notes, be it singers with low voice or singers with high pitched voice. However, the point to be noted here is that while you may sing the high notes, you have to make sure that you do not strain and sing. Straining for high notes not only damages your vocal chords, it also sounds as if you are shouting. Singing high notes is a skill to be mastered properly so that the beauty of the song is not lost.

Some singers also very often mix up volume and high notes. Singing in a louder voice does not mean that you have hit the high note. It only means that more people can hear you or you are making a lot of noise.

High note singing is an advanced stage in vocal training. The voice has to be trained to be controlled, yet hit the high notes without changing the tune or losing the key. Do not try to imitate the way your idols sing; this will get you nowhere. The idea would be to develop your voice slowly and gradually to reach the high note. This comes only with practice and goal. The muscles which help your vocal chords to perform have to strengthen, open up and allow you to sing higher notes.

High note singing is definitely more appealing than a song sung in a low register. Most songs cover a range of notes with highs and lows and with practice and proper training you will be able to sing it in the key in which it sounds best to the audience’s ear.
