Vocal Range Training

Luciano-voice-vibratoVoice vibrato as the name suggests is when the voice vibrates to give more expression to the song. This effect is produced in the voice when singing and the same effect is given by a pulsation in the pitch in an instrument. The “depth of vibrato” is characterized by the amount of pitch variation created and the “speed of vibrato” is characterized by the speed with which the pitch is varied.

Vocal vibrato is actually produced by oscillation of the vocal chords from an open pharynx/throat with good support from the muscles at the throat and firm control in the opening and closing of your vocal chords. If done properly vibrato can be very pleasing to the ear and adds loads of expression and dynamics to the music.

sing-high-notesSinging in the high register or singing high notes is natural and many singers have a habit of doing so whichever background or society they hail from. This is probably because high notes give more expression to your feelings. You are able to emote better in high note singing than while singing in the low register. Well, it is very common amongst people to shout with joy, or anger or desperation. While that is talking, singers in much the same manner express by singing in high notes.

It is common knowledge that almost all singers like to sing in high notes, be it singers with low voice or singers with high pitched voice. However, the point to be noted here is that while you may sing the high notes, you have to make sure that you do not strain and sing. Straining for high notes not only damages your vocal chords, it also sounds as if you are shouting. Singing high notes is a skill to be mastered properly so that the beauty of the song is not lost.

Have you always wanted to hit high notes? Well, you can.  It’s easy to do, once you understand how.  The first thing that you need to understand about singing high notes is how pitch works.

When you think about pitch, you shouldn’t think about hitting high notes.  In fact, you shouldn’t think about pitch as any sort of note.  If you want to hit high notes properly, you need to think of pitch as more like a picture in your head of a note that you want to hit.  It may be difficult, at first, but try not to listen to the music or to your voice, if you’re trying to reach a certain pitch.  Just go by the feel of your voice.

As a successful session singer, I have sung for many of Chris Huston’s projects, over the years.  In case you don’t know who Chris Huston is, Chris Huston has recorded with such artists as James Brow, Patti Labelle, Van Morrison, The Who, Blood Sweat and Tears and many more.  Why did Chris keep asking me back?  Well, it’s simple.  As a successful session singer, I learned to have a “How can I help you today?” attitude, rather than a “How can you help me today?” attitude.  So one of the successful session singer tips I have to offer you is to adopt that sort of attitude.  It’ll take you far in life.  If you are nice to others, nice things are bound to happen to you.
