How to Properly Scream Sing

scream-singing1.jpgA musical performance screaming doesn’t mean to scream your lungs out, it actually refer to how to properly scream sing! Though it can sound like a singer, screaming loud and hard. The musical screaming makes you learn how to use your false vocal cords in order to produce some screaming sounds. On being practiced everyday, you can learn the art to scream better. Also, don’t worry about the damage of your voice as you scream in the band.

Are you still wondering how to properly scream sing? There different techniques to scream singing. This article should teach you the basic ways of how to properly scream sing without suffering from vocal strain.

The biggest thing to remember about how to properly scream sing is that it is not what it sounds like. You do not need to yell as loud as possible to scream sing. It may sound like you do, but it is simply not the case. Scream singing really requires that you use your false vocal chords. That’s way you can scream in a band without straining or doing any permanent vocal damage.

Before you can learn how to properly scream sing, you need to figure out what vocal range you fit into. Are you a soprano, alto, tenor baritone etc.? If you don’t know then you should research the subject. You could also try singing along to a musical instrument. That can help you to determine what vocal range is yours.

Warming up is the next vital step to learning how to sing “screamo”. Scream singers such as Randy Blythe of Lamb of God, Byron Davis of God Forbid and Phil Labonte of All That Remains all do singing warm ups before they scream sing. Singing warm ups are exercises like scales, often done at choir practice sessions. Scream singers should use the same basic vocal exercises.

As you first start to learn how to properly scream sing you may also make some unusual noises. Some will be low, like a cat growling. Others will sound more nasal. The best thing to equate that noise to is the voice of Marge Simpson. It is a sort of nasal, grating sound. The difference is that the cat growling sort of sound is made from deep in your throat and can do damage to your voice. The higher, more nasal sound is safer and more comfortable for you to produce. Once you figure out how to make scratchy noises properly, from the nasal region, you will have gone a long way toward learning how to properly scream sing.

You should also learn how to sing from your diaphragm correctly too. You should not hold all of your air in your chest when you sing. The air should fill your stomach area, instead of you chest. One good way to test that is to place a hand on your stomach. If you are breathing properly it should expand when you inhale air.

If you follow these simple steps, you can improve your voice dramatically. So, protect your vocal chords while still doing what you love. Once you know how to properly scream sing it is easy, fun and safe to do!

Uhhmm..
There is no female screamer in Cradle of Filth, Dani Filth is a guy lol. Sarah is the female vocalist, but she only does singing/opera parts. Anyone can reach Dani’s range, regardless of gender, but it takes a loooong time and alot of practice. NEVER give up, even if you think it sounds like shit, the more you practice I guarantee you it will sound good after lots of practice. I’m proof. And it is harder for a chick to scream, but I have no idea why.

DON’T INHALE SCREAM. seriously. its a short cut and its not real screaming. All singing is projection of the voice , screaming is the same. inhaling is not doing it right. :) let me refer you to some video’s that have GREATLY helped me! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHPXhF5U-gU hope that helps :)

i gotta tell ya, you do have some very good vocalists to use as an example, but not one of those three can be compared to “screamo”, i know very well that lamb of god is not at all “screamo”, god forbid, dont know them very well, but cant be screamo, and neither is all that remains. you might want to edit that sentence.

I have been practicing for about a year (i am about to try my own summer by deftones), but i am still having trouble with long screams, i have tried vocal covers on certain lamb of god songs like laid to rest and hourglass but i cant hit that certain line near the end of those two, do i still need more practice before i can hit those lines?

You just need to work on your breathing excersizes. If you’ve already reached the point of a scream, to where it sounds good, then that’s great. Never stop practicing, even if you’ve become the vocalist of the next big metal band, never stop practicing, you get better everytime you practice. But it sounds like you just need to work on your stamina and breathing.. You can Google a few tips on how to build it up, but here’s some I can give you.
These will sound silly, but they work;
hold your breath. Hold your breath for a long time, until you feel like you can’t anymore. Then of course, breathe lol. But do this often, alone so you don’t seem like some kind of weirdo, and you’ll be able to hold in more air everytime. Same thing goes for screaming. All you have to do is when practicing, do long screams. Hold them out, but hold air in your diaphragm. You should’ve learned about that by now.

the key to a good sounding “screamo” voice is simple, yet unexpected, well… thats my opinion anywaysssss, all u gotta do is—DO NOT scream outwards, you Should try screaming whilst breathing in, and it creates the right voice fr screamo, but due to the noise being made whilst breathing in, it can sound a bit too quiet, but thats why microphones were kindly invented ;) peace, may the force by with you ;)

For me, I’ve noticed that there are many different ways to scream, one way that sounds like the screaming from the song Pray for Plauges by Bring Me the Horizon, and one that sounds like Of Mice and Men. The one from pray for plauges, it seems like if you do these screams, you have to use your throat more. Like if you go eh really loud then add your throat a bit to make it louder and sound more “goblin/screamo” like. Some say it can mess up your vocal cords, but others say it won’t if you take precausions. And it seems that in songs like Of Mice and Men, it seems like you don’t use your throat but you have to what you would do when you inhale but outward. This one is a bit more difficult to make loud. To me, I feel like, the Of Mice and Men would damage your vocal cords more because you’re scratching it, others say otherwise. What is truly the “unsafe” way to do it.

Examples of good screamers and their best screams:
Chester Bennington: Linkin Park – “Given Up” (2:01 – 2:45)
Fred Durst: Limp Bizkit – “Walking Away” (3:12 – end)
Jonathan Davis: KoЯn – “Good God” (2:27 – 2:45)
David Draiman: Disturbed – “Enough” (2:35 – 2:50)
Wayne Static: Static-X – “Anything But This” (whole first verse)

They all sound copletely different, but all use the vocal fry technique. It’s the only safe way to do it and it is very easy to learn, it just takes a lot of practice to sound good.

Make your voice go as low as possible, but still sound like a full, solid voice.
Take it just a tiny bit lower until it sounds slightly “raspy” or “crackly”.
Bring the pitch of your voice up to a talking/singing pitch, but keep the raspiness in your voice. This is the “vocal fry” technique. You’re on your way, you just need to practice.

Ps: While doing this, exhale from your diaphragm and drink water (room temperature) before doing this.
If it really hurts, stop straight away!

I hope this has been a really great help :)

I’ve been screaming for a while and I think the thing that confuses people is the death/false chord growl technique, which is different to the vocal fry technique.
To get this death-metal growl, or the Oli Sykes growl:
1. You know that “Urghh” sound that you make when you hear something that annoys you? It’s like a really heavy sigh from the diaphram? When you do this “angry sigh” it shouldn’t hurt, but it should sound like an ape/gorilla/monster noise. Does it feel like it’s coming from the middle of your throat, not the bottom? Good! Then this means you have successfully growled. If it feels sore, it means your using your true vocal chords, not your false ones (I don’t know much about the anatomy of the human throat, so pardon me for my singer’s jargon). Try and make it sound more ape-like than a dog bark. If it is surprisingly low, don’t worry. You can always try bending your pitch up when you master the skill of growling.

2. To increase the volume of this growl, you MUST breathe heavily from your stomach. If you can’t do this, try lying down and you’ll automatically notice that your stomach moves out when you breathe in. Now, remember how it feels and apply it to when your standing up or sitting. But it’s worth noting that growling actually shouldn’t sound too loud. If you’re doing it correctly, it should sound powerful, but no louder than a sonorous burp. (Sorry for the immature comparison, but it’s true!)

3. Singing melodically as a warm-up is beneficial. Lamb of God’s vocalist does this before every show. (Not a massive fan of Lamb of God so I forgot his name, sorry metalheads!) Just a couple of scales or arpegios should suffice.

The rest is basically up to you to improve and strengthen your technique. But whatever you do, DON’T growl from the bottom of your throat; this will probably hurt anyway, so you’ll notice the difference between the “angry sigh” and the throat growl.

Now, screaming using the vocal fry technique is different, so don’t confuse the two. Although I’ve heard of some very talented screamers who can get a low-pitched scream that sounds like a growl using the vocal fry technique e.g. Ronnie Radke from Escape The Fate, Mellissa Cross (screaming expert, creator of “The Zen Of Screaming”).

Recommended songs to growl to:
“Suicide Season” by Bring Me The Horizon
“Heartless” by A Day To Remember
“The Guillotine” by Escape The Fate from the album Dying Is Your Latest Fashion (the breakdown at the end)

p.s. Screaming damages your vocal chords regardless of how you do it – conservative people always tell you this, but it’s not true! They just don’t understand it. Have confidence in your ability as a vocalist.

i read one site (and this might be the one ive gone through so many websites looking for an answer for this) where it says that when you’re first learning, you want to try to get a marge simpson sound by getting the sound to come from up by your nasal passage. How can i do this and what will it feel like when im doing it right?

Just to settle this right here INHALE SCREAMS ARE NOT BAD FOR YOU IF DONE PROPERLY #2 INHALE SCREAMS ARE JUST AS GOOD AS NORMAL SCREAMS. Now I do inhale screaming and im working on exhales but I’ve been doing inhale for about 2 1/2 years and I can hit ANY pitch you can scream exhale. My announciation is really good I only have problems with a few consonants the only thing you need to be mindful and weary of is how much air you can take in too much air can cause you to drop your diaphragm or pop a lung

Thank you Laura, you helped a lot :D
