How to Sing Tenor Perfectly in 4 Easy Steps

how-to-sing-tenorIN both female and male singing voices there basically three types. There are some differences on how to sing tenor for male singers. Singers comfortable in high register, singers comfortable in the low register and singers comfortable in the mid register. This is not to say that they don’t sing the other registers, it is just their comfortable range and hence songs are chosen to suit the voice.

The tenor is the highest male voice in the modal register. Typically the tenor voice lies between C3, the C one octave below middle C, to the A above middle C (A4) in the choral music, and upto high C (C5) in solo singing. The low register for tenors is B♭2 (two B♭s below middle C). At the highest register, some tenors can sing up to two F’s above middle C (F5).

Learning how to sing tenor is not such an easy thing. In musical groups and choirs the singers are split into four parts. The tenor sings the high register, while the bass singers sing the low register. The tenors are sometimes divided into two sections with one section singing the highest range and the other section singing the slightly lower range.

Let me give you some tips to help you build your voice into a good tenor.

1. Have access to a keyboard. A tenor voice ranges from “C” below “Middle C” to the “C” above “Middle C“. Locate these notes on your keyboard with the a help of an instructor or a singing friend .

2. Once you have the notes on the keyboard, try to match your voice to those notes to see where you fit in. First check is to see whether you are a tenor. For this you have to hit at least majority of the tenor notes if not all. You may not be able to hit the highest notes on your first trial.

3. Learn to read music as this will help you recognize the notes in your music sheet and to sing without a break. Notes range from A to G with sharps and flats in between. These are assigned to the Treble Clef in a specific order.

There are some tricks to read music easily. A music sheet consists of 5 lines and 4 spaces. The notes that correspond to the spaces can be remembered as they spell FACE. F is the first space, A the second C is the third space and E is the fourth space. The lines can be remembered by the saying “Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge.” The first letter of each word corresponds to the line starting from the bottom. So, the first line is E, the second is G and so on.

4. Join a musical group or a choir to get practice. The saying practice makes perfect is really true for a singer. The more you sing the better you will become. In a group you also have the advantage of learning from others and at the initial stages your small slips will be covered by the other singers in your section. Learn to cover at least one ear and hear yourself sing. This will help you to correct any pitching errors. You can ask your friends to sing in your ear too, to start off on tune. That’s the ways to learn how to sing tenor fastest as possible.
