Singing “Screamo” or scream singing can be dangerous to your vocal chords if you do not use proper techniques. It is also essential to know how your vocal system works. If you follow the incorrect method of scream singing, then the vocal chords will undergo lot of tension causing big or small temporary damage.
Learning how to sing screamo should be the second step after building and strengthening your natural voice. If you try to sing screamo without perfecting your natural voice, your natural voice will get damaged beyond repair. Screamo technique and voice distortion comes with long practice. This rough sound should come with an exact flow of air in coordination with muscular pressure in the lower diaphragm.
There are 2 categories of scream singers:-
1. Singers who sing screamo because their voice has already been damaged by abuse of drugs and alcohol and they cannot sing in their natural voice.
2. Singers who have perfected the scream singing technique after they have developed their natural voice. These singers can sing either screamo or in soft and melodious voice.
Be sure to fall in the second category or else you will wind up with a voice beyond repair.
Let me give you some tips to develop the scream singing technique.
1) Choose your scream/distortion style singing: Scream singing is not limited to any particular style of singing. It can be done for hard rock, jazz, blues rock, pop or even Gospel. Hence by discovering your comfort levels in scream singing in relation to the style of song, you can develop and fine tune the technique without harming your vocal chords.
2) Find a good Vocal Instructor: A good instructor will first help you to build and strengthen your natural voice. After that the technique for scream singing has to be mastered with his help so that you do not damage your voice.
3) Focus on breathing techniques, resonance, volume and articulation. This comes only with regular practice and determination.
4) Warm up the voice: Before practicing screamo warm up your voice with natural singing for at least 30-40 minutes and ten minutes of breathing exercises. This is to relax and open up your vocal chords before you strain it for scream singing.
5) Drink warm water: Drinking warm water before practice or performance and at frequent intervals is a good idea to keep your voice clear and relieve your throat of dryness.
6) Avoid alcohol and drugs: They can dehydrate the body by affecting the brain which is responsible for muscular coordination while singing. Alcohol and drug abuse can also lead to breathlessness and lack of control over voice.
7) Avoid milk based drinks and foods: (chocolate & ice cream)These can form a coating in your throat resulting is decrease of air passage. Since these food items are heavy they also tend to develop phlegm.
Avoid cold items: Try to avoid taking anything cold including cold water. Whatever you consume should be preferably warm and it is better to have a light stomach before singing.
9) A word of caution: At any time you feel pain, burning sensation or irritation in your throat, stop singing immediately to avoid permanent damage. Rest your voice till it cures completely.

what am i supposed to relax when im screaming?
how much air do i push out?
i tried relaxing everything, and just use my diaphram, but i got this wierd whisper kind of sound and it didnt sound like a scream.
what are some more tips, and tricks and stuff u should/should not do?
You relax your chest, and tense your throat to push out air BUT DONT SCREAM FROM YOUR THROAT. Your power should come from your diaphram.
hey if your getting that whisper style that is perfect i started off using that style and then it perfected my screamo. well with the whisper style you have to learn to push air out with your abs and thats why ab excersises are good. when you start to do your whisper style and then practice pushing with your abs and you will advendualy hear some sort of screamo
Try screaming from the throat, not from your diaphram. What I usually do is I find the limit of my range and the next note- I stop trying to sing from my diaphram.
Don’t scream from your throat. You will ruin your voice, and will most likely permanently damage your vocal chords.
no one should scream from their throat! that could easily injure your throat and vocal chords temporarily or permanently. trust me. i tried screaming from my throat and for almost a month, i couldn’t sing. thank goodness it was only temporary. don’t want to lose my voice especially at my age. I am only 13. but just because the damage might be temporary, don’t take any chances, especially with that.
and BTW, these instructions and tips really helped me improve. I think i am pretty good at screaming now! THANX!
^^)
heey,
i’m new at this
and thanks
because i readed just in time
if i was going on with singing
my voice was now damaged
so thanks alot^^
you really helped meh=D
i’m gonna practice later and and i’m gunna stay away from fast food or something^^
and one question:
i’m almost 15 years but i wanna ask
am i old enough to learn screamo?o.o
Bye,
Bridget^^<3…

At age of 15th… I think it’s better avoid scream singing first. Build up your fundamental first. & then started trying some light screamo after your voice have been fully developed.
it’s just to reduce the risk of vocal chord damages, coz you’re still young for screamo.
I read the comment above, so I’m sure I’m not old enough to start screaming, I’m 13
I’m interested in singing kind of like Jimmy Urine from Mindless Self Indulgence, or “MSI”.
He doesn’t sing really normal ( if there’s such thing as normal singing :3 ), but he doesn’t always completely scream either. He’s more in between.
So what age should you start learning “screaming”, and what can I do now to at least start?
Thanks! -Ampcorp (Adam)
The singer for MSI seems to sing in a false voice, which is exactly how it sounds. He is singing, using all the techniques and what not to, but he’s not using his own voice. I believe that’s all he’s really doing. And at 13 you could start screaming. It just probably won’t sound very good.
ive been doin screamo since i was 12 and now im 15 but i cant get my singing voice to normal or my talkin voice have i damaged my voice? if so how do i fix it
Im only 11 but i’ve got a band. Im lead singer and when i try to scream all that comes out is a croak!! I know LOL !!
Any tips???
I practice whispering first , and by making it sound louder , ican now sing like spencer chamberlaine
you souldnt wisper scream its not reall screaming and it ruins ur voice
i’m 17 and do you think i can sing screamo? i tried singing the way i do and i take it to a whole new level. i sound like hayley. ugh. i’ll try these steps if it can improve my voice. thanks!
So, I’ve been all over the internet much to my disappointment ive had no luck- all i want to know is how loud actually do i have to scream? Because when i play with my band i cant hear myself, but it sounds quite loud by itself. Help please?
How do you scream from your diaphram? Whenever i try it sounds like crap and it ends up hurting my throat and i want to gag. I don’t get it at all.
Okay, so im 14 and was wondering if i could try screamo. Its just that nobody in my band wants to sing and i pulled the short straw and i was wanting to learn how to scream cos if i can do it right it will be so much better than my normal singing voice. =D
And i understand the bit about using the diaphram but what i dont get is that i just end up sounding like a cat getting hit with a car :S :S
And im sorry for having so many questions but last one = is it possible for a girl to be able to sound like Adam Gontier from Three Days Grace with practice?
Very helpful thank you. But one question? Would you happen to know of and good vocal coaches/screamo coaches in the Atlanta area? thanks
Hey!
I’ve screamed for around a year now, but i only do this kind of inhailing scream and i know that inhailing is bad for me, so i want to learn a better way of screaming.
Any kinds of tips would help a lot ^^
Hey i am a singer and i scream too. Im big on otep and sing there songs very well(the creaming too). i did a talent show recently. and i used my diaphram, but i was sore a tiny bit the next day i was fine no pain nothing so does that mean i have done it right or not?
Hey
I’m a guitarist in a technical death metal band I brought together with a few of my friends in the high school i go to. I’m trying to learn how to scream. I can do exactly what the website tells me to do, it just doesnt sound that loud. how do i scream loudly?
you dont need to scream loud you just have to turn the mic up alot thats what i do and iv been screaming since i was in 6th grade.im a senior now.I also havent dammagedmy voice i sing for like two to three hours a day.
Hey there imn 17 i’ve never been singing for real but i would like to learn how to sing and maybe start af band for fun with a couple of friends thats up for it. what i would like to ask is how long it aproxematly takes to learn how to sing screamo
?
Hey
I’ve been singing for about a year now, with a vocal coach, she says I’m good though – anyway, I play rhythm guitar, and the band want to do a cover of “My Heart” by Paramore- Seeing as I’m the only male (other than the drummer) I’ve been asked to try and do the screaming…
My vocal coach is helping with the screamo it’s self, (slowly but surely) What I want to know is if there are any techniques to screaming and playing at the same time – My coach plays piano, but that’s pretty different… thanks in advance
There is a big different between singing vocal and sing screamo. But, there is a major vocal singing technique you can use while sing screamo. That’s the proper breathe control and don’t push your voice too much to avoid strain on your vocal cords.
Hey, I’ve been wanting to start a band and my favorite music is screamo. Or bands that use the technique. I’ve gone from the range of Avenged Sevenfold to The Agonist and Black Veil Brides to All That Remains in music and have tried singing along, but cringe when it comes to the screaming voices, unless the music is blasting. I can’t really sing all that well in my normal singing voice but I’m wanting to learn. Are there any vocal coaches near Dayton, Ohio that can help?
I’m not very good at the high-pitched scream-sing, which is what most people are recommended to start with because it is more comfortable, but i started with the deep growl scream-sing and it sounds really good, i use false-chords and everything, i just started differently, and i would be more than happy to teach others how to do it.
I’m twelve years old, and I found out that my attempt to scream didn’t work out so well, and my larynx felt sore afterwards. Does anyone know what I was doing wrong?
its not that you did anything wrong. When you first start screaming, it will be sore, just like excersizing a muscle for the first time. You can continue screaming for a day or 2 and if it still feels sore, then stop and see if its wrong or not. If you want, i can give you my email so you can ask me any questions.
Hi, im 13 and i was wondering if anyone knows what type of Scream Andy Six does from BlackVeilBrides – Knives and Pens, If you know please tell me, and i started taking Screamo Seriously like a week ago and when i scream it sounds like im trying to hard and its not that loud, i also cant do very high screams, can someone please give me some advice?
he does the pig squeel screamo
I know for a fact that Andy Sixx from BVB uses an inhaling screaming technique–which I can do very well. I started with inhaling in order to gain some airflow control. It’s much easier to inhale than to exhale–but it sounds much different. I’ve been doing it for about 2 years,–I’m 14–and I haven’t suffered any change whatsoever in my singing voice, either. All you do is start by trying to talk while breathing in. After you get that down, try pulling more air in. If you do it right, you should be doing a scream. In order to change the pitch to a low, form your mouth into the shape of an “O,” and stick your bottom jaw out a little to make it lower. To scream higher while inhaling, open your mouth as wide as you can, and breathe in even more air. It’s pretty easy to learn. Also, screaming shouldn’t necessarily be that loud. If you’re feeling any vocal strain, you’re doing it wrong. It should be no more painful or straining than if you were to talk normally. The most important thing of scream-singing is *NEVER* scream from your throat–it’ll ruin your voice entirely. Always sing from the diaphragm. When you breathe in, fill up your stomach area rather than your lungs, then push the air out with force from your lungs. That’s the way to start off. It almost definitely won’t sound good to begin with–give it time. With practice and effort, you’ll be able to scream like a pro.
All of you must know how to sing properly first. If not, then dont scream . EVER. i recommend joining a choir class, because its basically the same thing as getting a voice teacher. just make sure you listen to what they say exactly. then when you want to start screaming the first thing you want to do is kind of a gorilla grunt. BUT NOT ROUGH. it may sound a little hoarse but it should not hurt at all. you will feel like its coming from the top of you chest. once you can do this, start doing vocal fry. this is the croak thing singer use at the beginning of a phrase. this comes from your throat, but is VERY RELAXED. just try singing deep while keeping your head up and relaxed. your voice will begin to make a popping, croaking sound. practice this but DONT OVER DO IT. just practice a little bit everyday. make sure you warm up before hand and drink a lot of warm water while practicing. then combine the two sounds and use your diaphragm a lot.
@TheMetalLord
using your diaphragm is the most important thing, however this does not mean you aren’t using you throat. what you mean to say is to not FORCE is from your throat, close your throat. as i said before, it would be a good idea to learn correct singing techniques before screaming. this is because correct singing uses the diaphragm and a relaxed throat and jaw, which is the same things required for screaming.
I try to do the high growls and it is easier on my throut but i dont think my voice is low enough yet for those beacuse Im only 12. Even though my low growls sound good and feel easier after 10 minutes of low growls it kills my throut. Please tell me some advice!
