How to Achieve the Proper Singing Posture

If you want to be a professional singer, few things are as important as learning the proper singing posture.  Best singing posture isn’t just about singing either.  It can affect everything you do.  Breathing, walking, speaking and singing are all dependent on your posture.  If you picture yourself walking with a  book on your head, you’ll understand what good posture is.  It can give you a confident look.  More importantly, though, it allows you to breathe in a full breath of air.  That makes it excellent singing posture.

Whether you want to speak, act or sing, posture is critical.  For singers, though, it is especially vital to have a good singing posture.  Why?  Well, it is impossible for your lungs to fully inflate if your rib cage is compressed.  When you slouch over, instead of having good singing posture, that is exactly what happens.
If you want to improve your singing posture, try “belly breathing”.  That means that your abdomen should swell as you inhale air.  First, hunch over and try it.  Then, try it standing fully erect.  Notice the difference between the two and you’ll understand why singing posture is so important.

Good singing posture, or any posture, for that matter, is basically the ability to hold your body in space comfortably.  The object is to be able to stand, sit or even lay down without putting more strain than you need to on your muscles.  That can be achieved a few different ways, but one of the easiest and most well-known is book balancing.

To use book balancing to achieve good singing posture, do exactly as it sounds.  Get a book and balance it on your head.  Start standing still.  Then try walking with it.  Also, try standing in front of a mirror.  Watch what your body looks like, as you balance the book on your head.  Remember that look so you can duplicate it later, without the book.

Having proper singing posture has so many wonderful benefits.  It can reduce muscle strain, back pain and muscle aches, for starters.  Good singing posture can also keep your joints and bones lined up properly.  It can reduce the stress on your spine.  It can even help you to conserve energy, so you won’t get tired as quickly.

Good sing posture affects everything you do, not just singing.  You’ll look happier and healthier.  You’ll walk with more confidence.  People will want to approach you and listen to you.

That means that you can improve your job status.  You can talk to both bosses and co-workers more easily.  You can speak in public or with a single person with equal ease.  Of course, proper singing posture can help you to perform on stage much better, too.  So, no matter what you want to do in life, having the proper singing posture can help.
