Why Are You Unable to Sing on Pitch Every Time?

Learn to Sing on Pitch!

The ability to sing in pitch doesn’t come easily to everyone.  But, if you believe that you are just completely tone deaf and can’t possibly improve, there really are options out there for you.  “Tone deaf” is, more often than not, just something people call themselves when they don’t want others to know that they don’t have the best singing abilities around.  Sometimes people say that to get out of public singing, as well.

What is being tone deaf, really?  Well, there are many other names for being tone deaf.  A few of them include amusia, tune deafness, dysmelodia and dysmusia.  No matter what you call it, though, being truly tone deaf means that you are lacking musical aesthetics.  The easiest way for you to understand what being tone deaf means is to compare it to being color blind.  It’s the same idea, only in terms of music, not color.  If a person has trouble recognizing songs or has trouble keeping a rhythm, it’s possible that they may be tone deaf.

If a person is tone deaf, they really can’t fully appreciate music as much as other people can.  They can’t distinguish between different musical pitches, you see.  Someone who is truly tone deaf can’t reproduce sounds or songs that they hear.  So, if you can recall and reproduce songs that you hear, you probably aren’t actually tone deaf.

Studies show that the ability to interpret sounds properly is natural in any healthy person.  In short, that means that, if you can hear at all, you should have the ability to carry a tune.  The problem, research indicates, is that people do not get enough training as they age, sometimes, so they don’t develop the ability.  Studies show that, unless a person is deaf or has some sort of accident that causes hearing loss, they should not be truly tone deaf.

If you believe you are tone deaf, as an adult, it probably stems from a lack of support when you were young.  If your parents didn’t encourage your singing, for instance, you may have taken that personally and become wary of singing in public.  So, as an adult, you feel that you are tone deaf, simply because you are scared to sing or haven’t had the proper singing lessons to learn how to sing in pitch.

So, tone deafness is not exactly what you might think.  People who call themselves tone deaf are not always.  If you want to overcome your singing problems and learn how to sing in pitch, take some lessons.  Remember to stay relaxed.  If your body is relaxed, your vocal chords will be too.  Sing with confidence, if you’re going to try singing at all.  That’s the only way to get over feeling like you are tone deaf.
