If you want to develop the ability to sing in pitch without a reference note, the first thing you’ll need is a tape recorder. After all, if you can’t play your voice back and hear your mistakes, they’ll be hard to correct later on. It can really help you to have the future reference point. After all, none of us really hear ourselves properly as we’re singing. You can’t always rely on others to tell you what you sound like either.
Next, use instruments to your advantage. If you have a piano, that’s best. You could also use a guitar or violin, though. If you don’t have any of those, try the Piano World or Electric Blues Club websites for virtual instruments. Whatever you do, though, don’t use a wind instrument. The object here is to improve your ability to sing in pitch without a reference note, after all. You can’t sing at all, if you’re too busy playing a wind instrument.
