A soprano under the scientific pitch notation is a singing voice with a vocal range from “middle C” which is C4  to “high A” which is A5 in Choral music. A “Soprano C” is C6 which is two octaves above middle C and it is higher in opera music. In choral style which is split into 4 parts the soprano takes the highest range which includes the melody. For other styles of singing the soprano is classified differently.

Usually the term “soprano” is used to refer female singers singing the high range. However sometimes this term is used to refer male singers singing this range with a falsetto instead of a modal voice.
