Does Eating Affect Singing Voice?

Does eating affect singing voice? It definitely can. Every food you eat, and even the times at which you eat, can affect your singing voice. Singing on either an empty or full stomach is not good. So, you have to choose carefully.

Don’t eat right before you sing. As far as eating and singing goes, that’s a horrible idea. It can cause you to have to clear your throat while singing. Plus, if your stomach is too full, your diaphragm won’t be able to move properly. Burping, hiccuping and being unable to get enough air can also cause trouble, if you eat right before you perform.

How else can eating affect singing voice? Well, starving yourself is a bad idea, as far as eating and singing is concerned. You should eat something. Otherwise, you won’t have enough energy. You could get headaches or feel sick, as you sing. Your stomach could even growl and disrupt your entire performance.

Don’t worry. There is a happy medium between eating and singing. The answer is to eat a balanced meal an hour or two before you take the stage. Avoid eating heavy foods. You need to eat things that will give you energy without making you feel tired or overly full. You might try eggs, for instance. They have a lot of protein, but they don’t give you a heavy feeling.

There are several foods you should avoid, when it comes to eating and singing. Dairy products can cause excess mucus to develop in your nose and throat, for instance. Alcohol, coffee and junk foods are not a good idea. Also, try not to eat too much salt or spicy foods. They can cause your throat to become inflamed. Also, when it comes to eating and singing, avoid soda or anything that can cause too much gas build up. Cold foods are also bad. They can cause constriction in your throat.

Eating and singing is not as impossible as it sounds, though. Luke warm drinks, like herbal tea, can be good for your throat before a performance. Chicken, eggs and fish are great foods for eating and singing. Rice is another option. Even apples and almonds can be good for your body, as well as your voice.

If, at some point, your throat is sore right before a performance, singing and eating can become especially important. There are certain small things you can eat right before you sing. Honey and hard candy, for instance, can relax your throat muscles. You can also try gargling with baking soda or salt water, if you want to soothe your throat.

So, does eating affect singing voice? Absolutely! You’ll be amazed at just how much it does. So, if you want to give your best performance, study the relationship between eating and singing.

apples are definitely good for the voice, I learned that by accident. I worked at a nightclub where people would smoke heavily and I would wake up hoarsed and sometimes no words would come out of my mouth and then I noticed if I ate an apple before I went to bed, my voice would be better in the morning. I had no idea almonds were great also, I’ll definitely start buying them again. I love the internet, such wonderful information.
