The Most Effective Vocal Warm-up Exercises
If you ever wondered if you can improve your singing voice by doing vocal strength exercises, you certainly can! Not everyone can sing well easily. In fact, most people can’t. Even the select few who can sing well naturally have to practice and do vocal exercises because, as with anything else, singing takes practice. Even natural talent can get rusty if it isn’t exercised, after all.
The first step to doing vocal exercises should be to hire a vocal coach or buying an
online singing program. Vocal warm-up exercises can improve both your speaking and singing voices, but if you do them incorrectly you could just make matters worse for yourself. By hiring a vocal coach, you can ensure that you are doing the vocal strength exercises properly and getting the most out of them. You might think that vocal coaches are too expensive, but the initial investment is worth it in exchange for the long-term results, if you want a career as a professional singer.
There are a few simple vocal warm-up exercises, which you can begin with. For instance, proper breathing is vital, if you want to sing, or evens peak, in the best possible tones. If you breathe deeply, using your diaphragm, you can achieve a smoother, fuller tone of voice.
One such vocal exercise is similar to telling a person to be quiet. All you need to do is hold your finger up to your mouth and exhale, making a “shhh” noise until you run out of air. Then, take a regular breath and repeat the exercise about five times. After a little while, you’ll notice you will be able to take deeper, fuller breaths, which means you will sing better because you will have a better capacity to hold air and release it at will.
A similar breathing technique is slow breathing. Slow breathing is one of the easiest vocal strength exercises you can do. Just take a slow deep breath, hold it for about twenty seconds and then slowly exhale over another twenty seconds. That exercise will help you to gain more control of your breathing, in much the same way as the “shhh” exercise.
You can also do scales (octaves), but, rather than singing and straining your voice, you can do scales using “lip rolls” (also known as “motor boats”). All you need to do is put your lips together and let them flap at high speed and then raise and lower the pitch up and down the scale slowly.
After that, the next set of vocal exercises you can try uses the same scale idea. Only this time use the syllables mum, do, nay, yay and no. Then, after you’ve done that go to two syllable words. Use la-gah and ya-gah for that. During both of those vocal strength exercises, be sure to keep your jaw relaxed.
By following those simple steps for doing vocal warm-up exercises, you can easily improve your singing voice.
