How to Hit High Notes Easily

Have you always wanted to hit high notes? Well, you can.  It’s easy to do, once you understand how.  The first thing that you need to understand about singing high notes is how pitch works.

When you think about pitch, you shouldn’t think about hitting high notes.  In fact, you shouldn’t think about pitch as any sort of note.  If you want to hit high notes properly, you need to think of pitch as more like a picture in your head of a note that you want to hit.  It may be difficult, at first, but try not to listen to the music or to your voice, if you’re trying to reach a certain pitch.  Just go by the feel of your voice.

When you are learning to hit high notes, you may think that you have to reach your voice up, in order to do so.  If you strain your vocal chords, you’ll actually lose air, though.  That, in turn, will cause your tone to get much worse, not better.  Singing high notes should actually be done in the same “head voice” as other notes that you sing.  Otherwise, your voice will crack, you’ll sing in a falsetto voice and your larynx will be strained.

If you can’t seem to hit high notes, it may be because you’ve emphasized use of muscles that you shouldn’t actually be singing with, such as the muscles in your throat that are used for swallowing or chewing.  Instead, you need to shift the focus to the larynx and surrounding muscles, which are meant for singing.  If you use the wrong muscles, your larynx, which should stay still, even when you are singing high notes, will move and cut off your air.  Your tone will suffer for it and you won’t be hitting high notes at all.

You can actually do permanent damage to your vocal chords, if you aren’t using the proper singing techniques.  Learning the proper techniques for hitting high notes is, therefore, not only useful, but also healthy.  If you don’t know quite where to begin on your own, you should consider getting a coach.  A good vocal coach can teach you the best ways of achieving your singing potential and hitting high notes safely.

As you first begin to learn the proper way of hitting high notes, you might have some discomfort.  You might find that your mouth and jaw muscles hurt.  You might even have some slight pain or tenseness in your neck.  Don’t worry!  That’s normal.  All of that discomfort should go away, as you retrain your muscles to sing properly.

So, don’t obsess over trying to hit the perfect note.  Just practice using the proper singing muscles and you’ll soon be hitting high notes with ease.  You will be amazed at how far a little practice will go.  You’ll wonder why you ever thought hitting high notes was difficult!
